Overview:

The Department of Innovation and Technology seeks an Analyst to join the Citywide Analytics Team.

 

The Citywide Analytics Team's mission is to use data to improve quality of life and enhance government operations in the City of Boston. By combining modern data analysis and visualizations with a deeply engaged approach to performance improvement and change management, the team works with departments across the City to solve challenging problems, build a more effective government, and deliver better outcomes for people who live and work in Boston. Under the direction and guidance of the Analytics Team leadership, the Analyst will be an essential member of the Citywide Analytics Team. The Analyst's work will directly contribute to operational and technical improvements throughout the City of Boston.

Responsibilities:
  • Leads and supports the design, development, implementation, and maintenance of ongoing reports, analyses, dashboards, and metrics for key operations and decision-making for City departments. Serves as a resource and content expert for the department in this process.
  • Proactively builds and maintains positive and effective relationships with Departments. Works with Departments to analyze results, forecast current and future needs, assess performance, and evaluate strategic opportunities.
  • Communicates with and presents to executive leadership project results and findings.
  • Works with the team’s data engineers and other departments in the development of data warehouses and other data sources to support managerial and business intelligence reporting needs.
  • Assembles, manipulates, and/or formats data and/or reports using various software applications such as desktop tools, spreadsheets, report writing software, statistical software, graphical presentation tools, and business intelligence (BI) applications.
  • Performs related work as required.

 

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:
  • A minimum of two (2) years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, professional experience in business or public administration, program management, or related field in work that included data analysis, reporting, dashboarding, mapping, and/or visualization using software and languages such as Python, R, SQL, ArcGIS, or Tableau.  
  • Experience in a government setting preferred.
  • A bachelor’s degree in business, public policy or administration, economics, computer science, or another STEM field is preferred and may be substituted for two (2) years of the required experience.
  • Must be able to manage multiple tasks simultaneously and react to problems quickly.
  • Must be able to translate concepts and directions into practical solutions.
  • Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Google Apps (Docs, Sheets, and Slides) is strongly preferred.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and focus on details as required by the job.
  • Ability to manage simultaneous assignments while maintaining a critical attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated ability to work on diverse teams and experience building strong relationships across a range of functional areas and seniority levels.
  • Proven verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proven organizational and project management skills.
